Sky Arts ‘Portrait Artist of The Year’ at the RDS

Every once in a while, the Dr Sketchy’s Dublin crew like to venture out of our current home in 4 Dame Lane and go on a road trip!

On the 14th of July, Dr Sketchy’s hosted a special event for Sky Arts ‘Portrait Artist of The Year’. A variety of craft stalls, painters and artists lined the main hall of the RDS, all centred around the Dublin leg of the Portrait Artist of The Year competition, where one contestant will be in with a chance to have their work displayed in the National Portrait Gallery and receive a £10,000 commission to produce a portrait for The British Library.

While the contestants worked away, people grabbed their sketchbooks as Dr Sketchy’s held three themed sessions; Degas, Mucha and Lichtenstein with models Sarah Vixyn, Azaria Starfire and Sade O’Sapphic, hosted by Headmistress, Scarlett Nymph.

The first theme of the day was inspired by Edgar Degas’ Ballerinas, with dancer and performer, Sarah Vixyn. In a picture-perfect romantic tutu, with ribbons in her hair and decorated in flowers, Sarah perfected Degas’ Ballerina poses, against a soft backdrop. The second theme of the day was based on Art Nouveau pioneer Alphonse Mucha, with superstar showgirl and performer Azaria Starfire, drawing inspiration from Muchas’ iconic Moet & Chandon campaign. Our third and final theme was an ode to Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein, featuring outstanding body painting and makeup by Marie. Burlesque star Sade O’Sapphic struck poses in styles of Lichtenstein’s iconic work for the second time! Pictures from Dr Sketchy’s full Lichtenstein session can be found here. The cameras rolled throughout all three sessions, making for an unusually quiet Dr Sketchy’s without any music playing! (and also meaning I had to apply my best Ninja Photographer skills to keep out of shot!) But everyone who participated told us afterwards how much fun they had – especially when their drawing skills won them cupcakes! Portrait Artist of the Year will air in November, hosted by Headmistress Scarletts’ new best mate, Frank Skinner. In the meantime you can find us this Sunday at Castlepalooza in the main ballroom from 3pm with our 60s Sci Fi / Space theme. (although, you won’t be able to miss us walking around, so come say hello!) You can also catch us at our regular session in 4 Dame Lane on the 31st of August for our Mucha theme with Azaria Starfire and Bella aGoGo.
