Culture Night 2013 – South Fred Fest

For the most part, the job of a photographer is simple; show up, take photos. But it took Scarlett Nymph (director of the Dublin Branch of Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School) at least three goes to explain the plan for Culture Night 2013 to me. Each year, Scarlett and Denise Donnelly (owner of The Doorway Gallery) spend months plotting and planning their part of Dublin Culture Night to make it something spectacular, an artistic event for everyone to enjoy.

So this year, on the 20th of September, their event spectacular took over the whole of South Frederick Street – in The Doorway Gallery, an estimated 2,500 people poured though the doors to catch a glimpse of ‘Goodalls Edible Art Gallery’, an exhibit created especially for Culture Night featuring food-based artworks from bakers, artists and confectioners from all over Ireland.

As queues stretched down the street, Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School was in full swing with two taster sessions. Models Kat Moiselle and Sarah Vixyn posed while the crowd sketched in the hope of winning delicious cupcake prizes. Sarah Vixyn modelled and performed a dark, acrobatic ballet piece as the Dark Sugar Plum Fairy in a costume made by yours truly and a hairpiece made by Kayleigh O’Brien of Bubblegum Hair Salon. Kat Moiselle sipped wine from a soy sauce bottle and nibbled away with chopsticks dressed as a super chic Sushi (complete with wasabi and ginger fascinator!) and later performed a side-splitting routine dressed as a giant corn on the cob complete with balloon-popping popcorn.

Accompanying Dr Sketchy’s sessions throughout the evening and entertaining the masses were a variety of musical and dance performances from Bonnie RyanTruly Divine and Her IndulGent, Dublin Diwali, Milk & Cookies StoriesRay Scully, and Kicking Bird!

So a food-themed Dr Sketchy’s life-drawing event, dance and burlesque, music and performances, an edible art exhibition – what will they come up with next year??

All photographs are my own, full photoset and more information about the edible art available on Dr Sketchy’s website.
